Hello 🙂

As it is our first official post on the blog I thought it might be good to talk a little bit about the building and its history.

Number 7 at Blackhorse Lane is quite a unique architectural pearl in the E17 area. Surrounded by new developments and industrial estates Creative Works building really catches the eye. And it is rightly so, beautiful, massive art deco, rounded corners, great old school brick work makes for a wonderful sight. Inside you will find a vast open space with natural light coming through from every direction, sunrise to sunset. With a view towards Wetlands it makes for a truly special space.

A bit of local history, the building was originally a factory for Gnome Engines that powered British fighter planes during World War I. Great rotary lightweight design, innovative at the time that influenced the outcome of the war and future of aircraft industry. This year we are celebrating 100 years since First World War ended and it is interesting how Gnome engine production effected Blackhorse Lane area.
After that in 1930’s Gnome House was used for a lift manufacturer Hammond Bros & Champness Limited that got liquidated around 1990.

When Alexis walked into the building for the first time, there was no roof and the pigeons made a home of it. Even though it was in a quite a state, he saw potential and loved the charm of the place. It is important to preserve the beauty of the past and bringing that building back to life became his goal. It took quite a few years but the good work Big Creative Education has been doing within the community and creative industries didn’t go unnoticed. With support from Greater London Authority, Big Issue Invest. CAN Invest, Charity Bank and local council we managed to transform that beautiful building into a workspace for creative companies, innovators, professionals that want to grow within creative industries. Caring our ethos for it to be a place that nourishes talent, helps grow, expand and innovate. (Apologies for the idealistic take, I just couldn’t help myself.)

The building has changed in the past few years, on the ground floor Gnome House and Inky Cuttlefish opened up and developers built an extension on top with new flats. We are very happy and proud to have such great neighbours! Gnome House is a community centre that does great classes, has an exhibition space and brings in local pop ups. They have been one of the venues that shifted the Walthamstow area from industrial into a friendly environment for creative community.

Inky Cuttlefish is a print studio and a gallery, they run workshops and for and for anyone interested in print art it is the place to go.

When we were designing Creative Works and the programme for it, we looked at it as a project for the E17 creative community. We wanted to bring in wealth of our contacts within creative industries and educational experience to build not just another office space but a co-working environment of growth and innovation. #WeLoveWalthamstow #E17
