At Creative Works, our members come from a wide range of creative backgrounds, each bringing unique experiences and perspectives. This week, we shine the spotlight on Debra Coleman, founder of Open Frame Coaching, who is helping creative professionals thrive through leadership training and coaching.
A Coach for Creative Professionals
Debra runs her own company, Open Frame Coaching, where she provides coaching and leadership development tailored for visual effects and creative professionals. With a background in the industry and a passion for supporting others, she helps clients build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
After four years of working from home, Debra joined Creative Works in February (this year). When her long-term partner moved in with her and they both worked remotely, she knew it was time for a change. “It felt healthier to find a workspace outside the house,” she explains. A trial week sealed the deal: Creative Works offered the atmosphere, value, and sense of belonging with like-minded people that Debra was looking for.
Finding Work-Life Balance
For Debra, being here has been transformative. “It’s so much better than I expected. Having a real separation between home and work has improved my focus and work-life balance. When I’m here, I can fully focus. When I’m home, I can switch off.”
The community has also been an unexpected highlight. While she hasn’t yet collaborated directly with other members, Debra values the casual chats and supportive atmosphere. “It feels a bit like having colleagues—without being overwhelming or noisy,” she says. She especially credits Eleanor and Amelia at the front desk: “Their friendliness and support have made a big difference and helped me feel welcome.”
Supporting Local Creativity
Debra was drawn to Creative Works not only for the workspace itself, but also for its role in strengthening Walthamstow’s creative community. She already admired Alexis, the founder of Creative Works and Big Creative Education, alongside the Big Creative Academy, for their commitment to nurturing creative talent. For Debra, joining Creative Works felt like a natural extension of that ethos—supporting and empowering local creatives—so becoming a member was an easy decision.
“I prefer to support local businesses over large corporations,” she says. “This space feels like a hub for local creatives and small businesses.”
When she’s not working, Debra enjoys exploring local gems. Café RODI is her go-to for the odd treat, Deja Brew is a favourite for its hidden garden, and Yonder offers great food and atmosphere. She also enjoys walking through the nearby Wetlands for a refreshing break during the workday.
Quick-Fire Favourites
- Favourite spot at Creative Works? The sofa area. “It’s a change of scene from my desk and a comfortable space to read, work, or just relax. I also love the aesthetic—the paintings and furniture make it feel special.”
- Best local lunch/coffee spot? Deja Brew in summer for its garden, Armstrong Audio for great coffee.
- One word to describe Creative Works? Welcoming.
The Final Word: Why Creative Works?
Being part of Creative Works has given Debra more than just a professional workspace—it’s provided a stronger connection to the local creative community. She also values the intergenerational aspect of the membership: “I like that people from different generations work alongside one another.”
Debra also appreciates that Creative Works hosts events such as Eat My Shorts, an evening screening of animated shorts curated and hosted by animators Harriet Gillian and Matt Partridge. The event adds yet another creative and engaging dimension to the community.
When asked if she would recommend Creative Works to potential members, Debra said: “Absolutely. It’s especially well-suited for people in the creative industries. For anyone seeking a professional yet community-driven environment, it’s the perfect fit.”
We are delighted and grateful to have Debra as part of Creative Works, and we look forward to seeing how her coaching continues to inspire and support creatives in our community.
